World Quantum Day

Application-driven quantum computing development through collaborative partnerships

World Quantum Day, on April 14, 2025, aims to promote public understanding of quantum science and technology. In the implementation of quantum computing, close cooperation between industry and academia is essential to translate theoretical approaches into practical applications and to efficiently bring technological innovations into industrial use.

Norderstedt, April 14, 2025 – Every year on April 14, the world celebrates World Quantum Day - a day of action to increase public understanding of quantum science and technology. "World Quantum Day underlines the importance of a structured exchange between science and industry for the successful implementation of quantum computing in industrial practice", emphasizes Joseph Doetsch, Quantum Computing Lead at Lufthansa Industry Solutions (LHIND).

While large technology companies are currently attracting attention with significant advances in the field of quantum hardware - for example IBM or Google - the quantum team at LHIND is focusing specifically on the development of algorithms and applications. The goal is to keep the path from scientific research to industrial application as short as possible. The implementation is done in close cooperation with scientific partners and research institutions.

LHIND is a member of the Quantum Technology and Application Consortium (QUTAC), which focuses on the development of practical industrial applications. The company is also involved in the Hamburg Quantum Innovation Capital (HQIC) initiative, which networks industry and academia on a regional level.

In specific research projects, LHIND is working with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) on quantum algorithms for optimizing flight routes and schedules. Together with the University of Hamburg, it is investigating the so-called gate assignment problem, which involves the more efficient allocation of gates at airports.

"The further development of quantum computing requires close interdisciplinary cooperation between companies, research institutes, start-ups and public institutions," says Joseph Doetsch. "We see ourselves as an active driver of this exchange - with the aim of harnessing the potential of quantum computing for specific industrial applications at an early stage".
