Challenges in the digital transition and strategies proposed by CIOs

Whitepaper on the new CIO Agenda 2025 study by CIO, CSO and COMPUTERWOCHE

Which factors are putting the brakes on digitalization in Germany? And what strategies are CIOs adopting to address IT challenges? These are just a couple of the issues examined in the recent CIO Agenda 2025 study conducted by COMPUTERWOCHE Research Services in conjunction with Lufthansa Industry Solutions (LHIND).

CIO Agenda 2025: how the IT sector is responding to the factors inhibiting digitalization

Challenges will dominate 2025 – that’s the view shared by over half of respondents to the CIO Agenda 2025 study, who feel that the economic situation presents increasing obstacles for business. This is putting the brakes on digitalization, with frequently cited factors including the uncertain geopolitical situation, high energy prices and the skilled worker shortage. Yet, only a third of German companies consider themselves moderately to poorly prepared for these challenges.

Nevertheless, the companies surveyed in the study intend to invest further in their IT systems. As a result, IT budgets will rise again in 2025 – with almost one in five companies planning to boost their budgets by over 10%.

CIOs’ expectations for the year ahead

On top of energy costs and growing bureaucratic burdens, another obstacle identified by companies is a lack of willingness within their organization to embrace change. Despite this, 75% of respondents said they expect their IT departments’ responsibilities to change in the years ahead – in some cases, significantly so.

AI development will also bring about wholesale change. Many market observers feel that 2025 marks the start of a realization phase for AI. Artificial intelligence is identified as the Number 1 game-changer: AI has already been deployed in data analysis, process optimization or marketing and advertising by at least 50% of the surveyed companies – and this figure is on the rise.
